“Elemental”

(Thematic, Photographic)
“[The] idea springs from the traditional ‘Earth-Air-Water-Fire’ quartet, but it could be spun to include anything on the Periodic Table or further anything that is an elemental piece of some bigger thing. Like... Tinker Toys or Legos... or Chocolate chips...”
So my contribution to this weeks Thematic Photographic:

“Odd”

(Thematic, Photographic)

I like this week's theme a lot. “Odd.” Originally I looked through my archives for photographs of odd things, but then I read Carmi's description more closely:
“I take a lot of weird pictures. The kind of pictures that make folks stop and stare as I'm shooting them. The kind of photos that prompt the Doubting Thomases of our world to accuse me of wasting film...and time...So for the next week, I'm hoping we'll all share some oddball shots that get the raised eyebrow look from friends and strangers alike.”
I have a bunch of these, and I had a hard time weeding through them so as not to overwhelm. But I managed it, and here are my photos where people say “Why the heck did you take a picture of that?”.

Remember to click on the photos if you want to see them larger...

So exactly who is it that keeps training the guys who build bathrooms to put the toilet paper too low? Is it something the men do only to the women's room as some stupid joke? Or are they a bunch of morons?

These things are beautiful enough to photograph...when they're on someone else's property.

My mom made me take this when she got all upset about a ticket she was going to try to fight. It's actually quite lovely, isn't it?

I don't know why I was surprised to see advertising on the subway entrance turnstiles in New York City.

I snap photos of a lot of the odd things I find around my house.

How could anyone not think this was worth photographing? How often to you really get to see a bunch of frozen mice in a plastic bag? How could I not take a photo of this?

Had a great time looking through some old photos and finding these. Loved this week's Thematic Photographic: A weekly meme wherein a topic is given and people contribute links to their blogs where they have posted their contributions. To learn more about it, go here.

“Clouds”

(Thematic Photographic)

As soon as I read this week's theme is clouds, I knew I'd be using this one. It's my favorite shot from our trip to the Great Smoky Mountains in 2008 (more photos from that trip here).

Here are some clouds from the Bronx River when we went to the zoo not too long ago:

(Click on photos to see them larger.)
I also recalled photographing the man-made clouds on an airplane a while back, loving the realization that that's what they were:

But the clouds here in the North East U.S.A. have looked like this for about three weeks straight, and they have no right to photograph so beautifully, the joy-sucking annoyance that they are:

But this weekend, the one where I wanted to photograph clouds, they lightened up for me and presented me with some joyous glory and breathtaking photographic opportunities:

Even managing to present differing incredibly beautiful colors from the front and back of my house:

And giving me an uplifting show in the evening:

Clouds where the pictures in them were so obvious (see the profile of a man, gently reaching out with a finger to touch the tree?):

(And a face of a grimacing man?)

But then those blasted storm clouds came rolling in again. Those are not puffy white clouds on a dark blue sky, but one giant dark blue cloud crowding out the lovely light blue sky behind it:

Thank you earth for providing me with beautiful clouds to keep my head in this weekend. And thank you Carmi, for reminding me to do so once in a while.

“Road”

(Thematic, Photographic)

I'm a huge lover of taking "road" photos.

From my archives: The road from Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains.

From my archives: The road from New Jersey.

From my archives: the road leading away from my house.

This week on my way to the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY.

“Signs”

(Thematic Photographic)

I read about this meme quite a while ago, but only recently decided to give it a try. So I posted my favorite sign from my archives once I knew the theme, and planned to spend some time photographing the mundane this week. Well it so happens that I found myself a passenger on a long drive with lots of signs. Some mundane, and some actually fun and interesting. All photographic.

Thanks Carmi, for reminding me to find the beauty in everything...it's something I needed to be reminded of!

So here are a few of those I took over the weekend...

"Triple J Feeds"

"Turn Left Now"

"Happy Memorial Day"
